OAKLAND, Calif. - Feb. 1, 2024 - Turnitin’s AI writing detection feature has been shortlisted by 2024 Bett Awards in the “AI in education” category for demonstrating outstanding innovation in the last 12 months in artificial intelligence.
Coined the “Oscars of the education world,” the 2024 Bett Awards are a celebration of the inspiring creativity and innovation that can be found throughout technology for education and each winner was selected by a panel of over 25 prestigious edtech leaders.
“We are extremely honored to be recognized by such a prestigious edtech leader for our AI writing detection feature,” said Annie Chechitelli, chief product officer at Turnitin. “Prior to the launch of ChatGPT, for over two years, our team has been working on AI writing transparency that would help educators guide students to use AI responsibly and support academic integrity.”
Responding to the call for a tool that could help educators identify indications of AI writing in academic settings, in April 2023, Turnitin launched its AI writing detection feature. The tool provides educators with a report within their existing Turnitin workflow with an overall percentage of the document that AI writing tools, like ChatGPT, may have generated.
As of Nov. 9, 2023, Turnitin has reviewed more than 142 millions papers. Of those 142 million papers, nearly 10 million were flagged as having at least 20 percent AI writing present and nearly 4 million have over 80 percent AI writing present. The AI writing detection feature was also named Best of Show by Tech & Learning in August 2023.
In addition to the detection feature, Turnitin provides best practice guidance, content and resources to support responsible integration of AI writing and detection tools in classrooms and policies. For more information, visit Turnitin’s AI writing landing page.
The 2024 Bett Awards was hosted during Bett UK in London, 24-26 January, 2024.
